After you apply for a position with your healthcare recruiting firm, they often will schedule a phone interview to further explore your qualifications and see if you would be a good fit. It’s up to you to impress the recruiter and get to the next step in the process.

Here are a few tips to help you shine in any phone interview.

Study the job description. Learn everything you can about the position you are applying for. If the facility’s name is disclosed, research the organization as well.  Interviewers expect you to be prepared with at least a rudimentary knowledge of their company. Be prepared to discuss how your experience and skills are a perfect fit for the qualifications listed in the job description.

Prepare to impress. Treat the phone interview as you would an in-person interview. Dress up more than you normally would to get yourself into a profession mindset. Have your resume, the job posting, and your company research within reach. One of the advantages of phone interviews is your ability to have reference materials available, so take advantage of the opportunity to keep them at hand.

Reduce distractions. Schedule the call for a time when you won’t be interrupted. Outside your regular working hours is best so that you can give the interviewer your full attention. Take the call where you will be alone, preferably with a door that closes.

Know what you may be asked. There are common interview questions that come up for virtually any position. Knowing in advance how you will answer, and preparing specific examples, can give you a boost of confidence before your interview. You can always expect to be asked “tell me about yourself.” Prepare and practice a concise answer so that you don’t start your interview by rambling.

Take notes and prepare questions. If you move on to the next round of interviews,  the information you learn from this interview could be invaluable, so pay close attention to anything you glean from the interviewer and write it down. You’ll be surprised how much you may not remember, especially if you are nervous. Ask questions about the company and the role; remember interviews are a two-way conversation.
