As with many medical careers, demand for CT Technicians is growing. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates job growth for CT Technicians and other radiologic technologists will near 21 percent between 2012 and 2012, higher than the average increase. Computed tomography (CT) is a demanding field, but not without its rewards. You help people in some of the most stressful and difficult times of their lives and can earn fifty-five to sixty thousand dollars per year or more depending on your experience, education and location.

What does it take to be a successful CT Technician?

Education:

An associate or a bachelor’s degree program in radiologic technology is normally required, followed by state licensure as a radiologic technologist. Most employers will prefer that candidates complete a CT technology certificate program and obtain certifications from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

CT Technicians should have strong math and technical skills in order to operate imaging machinery correctly. They should also be physically fit. Technicians frequently spend long hours on their feet and must be able to assist and position patients. People skills are also important to calm and reassure patients who may be in pain or under stress.

Common duties include:

  • Documenting medical history and answering patient questions
  • Interpreting physicians’ imaging instructions
  • Adjusting and maintaining equipment
  • Positioning patient and equipment to capture image correctly
  • Ensuring images provide details needed for physician diagnosis
  • Accurately recording and storing images and data

Where can a CT Technician work?

Most jobs are in hospitals, diagnostic labs, outpatient centers and doctors offices. CT Techs are often expected to be on call because of emergency and around-the-clock need for their services.
