Finding the right job as an X-ray technologist isn’t always easy, even for those who have been through an accredited program. However, there are a few strategies you can take to increase your chances of finding the right position for you quickly and with a minimum of stress.

Consider PRN positions. They can be a great stopgap measure while you find a full-time role and give you a chance to try different work environments. You may also decide that PRN is a great long-term choice for you. It offers both flexibility and variety.

Choose the right program. Some hospitals run their own programs and look to their students first when hiring. If you have not begun your education, look at the placement rates for new students, and see if there is a program that offers a high chance of being hired.

Focus on soft skills. Working as an X-ray technologist means you are seeing people at their worst. They are frightened, in pain and don’t know what to expect. It’s up to you to provide a degree of comfort to them, so empathy is important. Demonstrate this ability in interviews and on the job to set yourselves apart from other candidates.

Stay up to date. Technology changes quickly in this field, and it’s essential you keep up if you want to remain a viable candidate. And stay in shape. Long hours and the need to lift and position patients make this a physically demanding job.

Network. Join professional associations such as American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) to get to know hiring managers, industry thought leaders and even peers who may know if there are any openings coming up at their company.

Expand your horizons. Keep an open mind about where you work. There are all kinds of facilities that require the services of an X-ray technologist from large hospitals to small outpatient facilities. You can even use your degree to teach or get a position in medical equipment sales.
