What is a Radiologic Technologist? 

Radiologic technologists (RT), often referred to as X-ray technologists or radiographers, are truly indispensable members of a healthcare team. Steps to Become a Radiologic Technologist 

Step 1: Educational Requirements 

To become a radiologic technologist, you should first earn a high school diploma or GED. After that, there are a couple pathways to choose from. Regardless of which you choose, look for a program that has earned accreditation from the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). 

  • Associate Degree. This two-year program provides comprehensive training in radiography, including classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree. This is a four-year program that gives a more in-depth education and advanced training, along with hands-on clinical experience.  

Step 2: Certification and Licensure 

After graduating from an accredited program, you must pass a certification exam to become certified and registered as a Registered Radiologic Technologist (R.T.) (R). This is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). 

Depending on the state you live in, you may also be required to meet additional licensure requirements to practice.  

Step 4: Specializations and Career Advancement 

While many radiologic technologists begin their careers taking X-rays, there are many opportunities for specialization and career advancement. The ARRT offers various primary certifications in areas like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy, and sonography.   

You can also pursue even further specialization with post primary certifications. These additional credentials allow you to expand your expertise into specialized healthcare fields like bone densitometry, breast sonography, cardiac interventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), mammography, vascular sonography, and vascular interventional radiography.
